Increasing numbers require increased space

Hayesfield Girls’ School in Bath is a very popular and high achieving Girls’ School with a mixed Sixth-Form. With GCSE results being in the top 10% nationally demand for places is always high, therefore increased space was required to provide the learning environment necessary to deliver exceptional teaching.

Continuing relationships

Hookway has been working alongside the school for almost 5 years to maintain, refurbish and extend their estate. A particular challenge was the lack of space available in and around the dining hall during busy lunch times.  Additional teaching space was also required to house the increasing numbers of pupils.

Hookway was appointed to develop a solution to these issues and, alongside Bristol based Oxford Architects, a new two-storey extension was developed. Being in a Conservation Area and also a World Heritage Site the materials and design had to be carefully considered. Planning Permission was achieved and the construction commenced on site in late 2020.

The extension is now complete and provides additional space for dining on the lower floor and a large open plan drama studio on the upper floor. The new drama area provides a much-improved facility and has also freed up the existing drama space for classrooms.

Additional balcony space is provided to the upper floor for warmer weather dining and a link bridge provides easy access and exit to the older parts of the campus.

A resounding success

Despite the issues presented during construction by the global pandemic the building was completed at the end of 2021 to the original budget. Hookway undertook Project Management, Employer’s Agent, Principal Designer and Quantity Surveying duties for the Client.

The students, teachers and client are all delighted with the new improved facilities and Hookway are proud to be involved with such a successful project.
